Center of Portugal

Perhaps the least known of all Portugal's regions, Centro de Portugal offers a varied and surprising landscape of verdant hills, fabulous beaches, historic villages and the steep slopes of Serra da Estrela - the highest mountain in mainland Portugal and home to its most famous cheese.

Known by the Portuguese simply as the “Beiras”, this region is home to some of the most emblematic dishes in Portugal and is immediately associated with hearty and tasty food, from historic cities such as Coimbra, where the oldest university in Portugal is located, and full of traditions that are still part of our lives today, such as Nazaré and Aveiro.
